The historical highlights of injection moulding company AKF Plastics
1930
On the Baarsjesweg (Amsterdam Old-West) was a firm of tool makers named the ‘Amsterdamse Gereedschappen Fabriek (AGF) CV’, which mainly focused on the production of cutting, bending, tracking and punching stamps for the metal industry.
1970
In the 1970s, the company gradually started focusing on the production of injection moulds for the emerging plastic market in the Netherlands. The old craft, focused on metal dies, was gradually left behind.
1972
In 1972, this company was bought by Jan Willem Knoop, a construction entrepreneur from Groningen, primarily as an investment. The son-in-law and daughter of Mr. Knoop, Cees and Maddy Bakker, became employed in this company.
1980
In the 1980s the purchase of the first injection moulding machine was made, primarily intended for in-house testing of the injection moulds they produced. The first 0-0 series and the first production series soon followed. The number of injection moulding machines expanded rapidly and the ‘Amsterdamse Kunststoffen Fabriek (AKF) BV was established.
1987
In 1987, the existing housing, still in the middle of Amsterdam’s city center, became too small, and the problems with the residential environment too large. It was decided to purchase and occupy a business premises on an industrial estate in Naarden. Both companies moved to Naarden, to the current production location.
1990
In the 1990s, the injection moulding production was gradually expanded and the focus shifted permanently from a mould maker, to an injection moulding supplier with its own tool making.
1995
In 1995 the new generation of owners entered the company, and in 1999 both companies were taken over by them. Both business activities were then brought together to form the current company ‘AKF / AGF Industry BV’.
2000
In the following years the emphasis was increasingly placed on injection moulding which continued to grow. In 2010, business premises were also added to the company, which until then had been rented from the family.
2012
In 2012, the existing accommodation became too small, unsuitable for the business activities, and in urgent need of renovation. In 2012, a start was made on the construction of a new business premises consisting of two state-of-the-art production halls and offices at the location of the existing premises. This construction was completed in 2016 and the company is now ready for the future.
2020
AKF/AGF industry becomes AKF Plastics and undergoes a brand makeover. The logo remains the same, but the company name, color scheme, and overall branding are sharpened. AKF Plastics will further focus on the specialist requirements of the Aerospace, Automotive, and Construction Industries. A new 1600-ton injection moulding machine enables AKF to produce large parts in large or smaller specialized series.
2023
Contingency Production™ is a unique strategy developed by AKF Plastics to provide stability and reliability in the injection moulding production process, even in uncertain market conditions. The strategy is based on four key pillars.
2023
AKF Plastics has joined a groundbreaking research and development project in collaboration with TPAC (ThermoPlastics composites Application Center), a part of Saxion University of Applied Sciences. The aim of this project is nothing less than transforming thermoplastic composites from waste into reusable injection molding granules, resulting in a sustainable and circular solution for production waste and end-of-life material.
2024
AKF Plastics purchases a piece of forest worth 7.4 hectares and invests in 1,318 solar panels, covering a total area of 2,600 square meters. This marks a new phase in our commitment to environmental protection and sustainable plastic production.
